Vincent Abate and his "little" brother, Andrew, could never stand to be apart from each other for too long...

Even at family gatherings, her two only children were inseparable, Elaine Abate said...

"Christmas Eve was their favorite time," she said... "They loved it because we were all together..."

But the two Cantor Fitzgerald bond traders - both missing in the World Trade Center disaster - didn't need a holiday to gravitate to each other...

Andrew Abate, 37, of Melville, and his wife, Carolyn, would often take drinks and a few steaks to Vincent's weekend home on the Jersey Shore... "They both loved the time they spent at that house," their mother said...

Warm weekend days would be spent barbecuing on Vincent's grill or sunbathing at the beach...

But inevitably, the weekends would end, and Andrew would travel back home to Melville, and Vincent, 40, would head home to Brooklyn...

The brothers would wake up on Monday mornings and head to work... They both had offices on the 105th floor of Tower One...

"Vincent started working at Cantor Fitzgerald pretty much straight out of college," their mother said... "Andrew has been working there for about three years now... They were always together... They worked together and played together..."

Vincent and Andrew were born in Brooklyn, where they both attended St... Francis Cabrini Grammar School... "Even when they were kids, they did everything together," their mother said...

They attended Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, where they played football and baseball... During the summers, the brothers were part of a swim team in Freeport...

College separated the two, with Andrew graduating from the C...W... Post Campus of Long Island University in 1987 after his brother had graduated from Ithaca College three years earlier... But they would soon find themselves working "side by side at Cantor Fitzgerald," Elaine Abate said...

The Abate family spread out geographically over the past few years, she said... She and her husband, Alfred Abate, traveled between their Boca Raton, Fla..., and New Hyde Park homes, but they always found time for family gatherings...

The brothers were last heard from the weekend before Sept... 11, their mother said, when they phoned her to "say hi and find out how things were..."

A memorial service for the brothers took place Saturday...

Sitting in Andrew's living room, Elaine Abate had a comforting thought about her sons: "The one thing I want people to know is that they were together as much as they could be..." --Nick Iyer (Newsday)

When Jay Adler was a college freshman, he spent Thanksgiving with his brother Lee in Texas...

"I took a friend," Adler recalled... "Lee's a really great cook; he made turkey with all the trimmings... And as if that weren't enough, the next night he made lasagna -- just for something different... The last night, he made a brisket..."

The boys got spoiled... "Neither one of us wanted to go back to dorm food," he said... "Lee loved being a host... He wanted you to have the best of things..."

Lee Adler, 48, of Springfield, died in the terrorist attack on New York last week... He worked on the 103rd floor of One World Trade Center as a computer designer for Cantor Fitzgerald...

Relatives recalled Mr... Adler's kind nature, love of sports, devotion to his Jewish faith and the protective stance he took as the oldest child in a close-knit family...

"We all went to camp together one year," said Jay Adler... "I was about 14... I was playing cards for money and these guys I was playing with were cheating..." Jay then refused to pay... Things got ugly...

"Lee came to my rescue," he said... "I was never one to run to him, but that was one of the few times I went to him and he stood up for me..."

Mr... Adler was a member of the board of trustees of Temple Beth Ahm in Springfield...

He coached his 12-year-old daughter's soccer, softball and basketball teams...

"He loved sports," said his mother, Isabell... "He was a die-hard Giants fan..."

He was also a protective brother, said his sister, Randi of Florida... "He felt responsible for us, especially after the death of my dad a few years ago," she said... "He really took on the patriarch role..."

Mr... Adler worked for Cantor Fitzgerald's ESPEED Division for the past year... Before that, he worked for Cotellegent in Nutley; Contingency Planning Research, White Plains, NY; and Computer Associates in New York...

A lifelong resident of Springfield, he received a doctorate in nuclear chemistry from Texas A&M University in 1984...

Mr... Adler is also survived by his wife, Alice (nee Doerge); daughter, Lauren Sarah, and another brother, Aaron...

Peggy Jezycki Alario's husband was planning to surprise her with theater tickets and a Manhattan dinner for her birthday the week after the World Trade Center attack...

Mrs... Alario, 41, worked at Zurich American Insurance Company as a global products manager at 1 Liberty Plaza... But on the morning of Sept... 11 she was on the 105th floor of 2 World Trade Center for a meeting...

She had planned to leave after the meeting, returning to Staten Island for the afternoon... She had a personal commitment that she didn't want to break...

But she never made it back to her home on Lighthouse Hill...

When she left she said, "'I love you and I'll see you this afternoon,'" said James Alario, her husband... "That was the last time I saw her..."

Though she did call her mother from the 90th floor and said she was safe, her family never heard from her again... She is now among the thousands who are missing...

The mother of two young boys, Mrs... Alario seemed to balance it all...

She was a career woman who landed a high-powered job for a world-renowned insurance company... Prior to being hired by Zurich in 1998, she worked for Cigna Insurance Co..., Manhattan, and American International Group, Manhattan...

"She would work 12-hour days, come home and jog and then take care of the kids," her husband said... "She was incredible..."

Though she was constantly striving for success at work and moving up the corporate ladder, her family was always her first priority...

"No matter what time she came home at night she always made the last few innings of every game [her kids played]," said Patricia Lambo, a friend whom Mrs... Alario met in kindergarten...

Mrs... Alario never missed a Saturday night with her kids... Every week the family went to an evening mass at St... Patrick's R...C... Church in Richmond and then out for dinner -- a ritual she loved...

On the Saturday before the attack, the Alarios hosted a 13th birthday party for their son, James Jr..., an annual tradition she created for both sons' birthdays... It was the last time that most of her extended family and friends saw her...

Her younger son, Dante, is 9...

Mrs... Alario loved entertaining at home... Her specialty cupcakes topped with crushed Oreo cookies were always on the menu for birthdays and anniversaries... "It was the only thing she knew how to make," her husband said, with tears in his eyes...

Born Peggy Jezycki in Rosebank, Mrs... Alario moved to New Springville in 1983 when she married and lived there for 10 years before relocating to Lighthouse Hill with her family...

She graduated from Curtis High School in 1977 and then took college-level business courses at several institutions, including the College of Staten Island and the College of Insurance in Manhattan...

Mrs... Alario loved to dance, jog in her neighborhood, listen to music and sit on the beach... She met her husband on the dance floor at a nightclub in Hampton Bays, a beach resort on Long Island, and the two quickly fell for one another...

"It was July 10th at 10 to four," Mr... Alario said of their introduction... "It was the last dance..."

The couple had since spent a week each summer at Cape May, N...J..., Mrs... Alario's favorite vacation spot, or at Ocean City, Md..., where she would stay on the beach until the sun went down whenever she could...

Mrs... Alario and her friend, Ms... Lambo, shared everything, including the Rod Stewart concerts they never missed...

"We've been friends for 37 years," Ms... Lambo said... "She was not just my best friend, she was my sister..."

Her husband described her as a "natural beauty," who never needed makeup...

In addition to her husband, James, and her two sons, James and Dante, Mrs... Alario is survived by her parents, Stephen and Katherine Jezycki, and two brothers, Stephen and Michael Jezycki...

A memorial mass will be held Sunday at 2 p...m... in St... Joseph's R...C... Church, Rosebank...

Maria Amaranto was a 19-year-old bride arriving in Brooklyn from Salerno, Italy, with her new husband, Angelo... She remembers him being a perfect gentleman and a true romantic...

"He took me everyplace the first time I came," she said... "We would go to the movies, the Statue of Liberty ......... We went to the theater, the Rockettes, the circus..."

From their 40 years of married life together, Maria has many more happy memories - Angelo in his beloved garden, growing tomatoes, basil and eggplant; Angelo cooking his favorite marinara sauce; Angelo taking the couple's oldest son, Armando, to see "The Ten Commandments"; Angelo's joy in his three young grandchildren...

But the life of Angelo Amaranto, 60, was also one filled with long, hard hours of work... A janitor at the World Trade Center since the Twin Towers first opened, Angelo woke at 3 o'clock each morning and took the subway from Borough Park, Brooklyn, into the city...

"He loved his work," Maria said... "He would go to work one hour or two hours before it started... Sometimes he would work Saturday and Sunday..."

Angelo had planned to retire in two years, Maria said... "He said, 'I work all my life, and I need to rest, and we need to go places, you and me together...'"

The couple had planned to return to Salerno, said their daughter, Emily Amaranto...

"He never got to enjoy himself," she said... "Now he was finally going to enjoy a little bit of life, a little bit of what he earned... And then this [the trade center attacks] happened..."

Still, she recalled, her father was always a happy man...

"He used to say to us, 'You know, a lot of people have money,'" she said... "'I have something better than money... I have grandchildren...

Deborah Amato always used to wonder why her husband was such a stickler for attending wakes and funerals and fund-raisers for the widows and children of fallen city Fire Department members...

That was before she became a widow herself, before the Sept... 11 attack that claimed Squad No... 1 Capt... James Amato of Lake Ronkonkoma, before the funeral service Friday that drew more than 1,000 mourners from firehouses as far away as Florida and California...

"I look at it in a different view, that's for sure," she said Monday, as she rested upstairs in a house full of visitors... "He always just went... Now I look at it, it was a commitment, a brotherhood at the firehouse... He was very passionate about his job..."

Amato, 43, an Oakdale native who attended Connetquot High School, always talked about life at his Park Slope firehouse, and couldn't wait to get back from family vacations so that he could return to the "place where he felt tranquil," his wife said...

But at home, he was a pushover for his children: Sean, 21, Tara, 14, Katherine, 13, and Ashley, 8, spending every moment he could with them...

As Jehovah's Witnesses, Amato and his wife also dedicated many hours on days off to preaching their faith, and church members have rallied around the family in recent days...

Deborah Amato was sorting the mail Sept... 11 when someone phoned to say a plane had struck the trade center... She didn't think he'd be involved because he worked in a different borough...

As evening fell, though, after a day spent trying to get through to the firehouse, "I knew something was wrong, because he hadn't called me..."

For both James Barbella and Joseph Amatuccio, their jobs went beyond taking care of the World Trade Center... Both men loved the Twin Towers...

"He loved it... Those were his buildings," Monica Barbella said yesterday from her home in Oceanside... Barbella, a 53-year-old ex-Marine, even incorporated one of the towers into his exercise routine... At least a couple of times a week, he would run up the stairs - all 100-plus flights of them - to keep in shape...

Debra Amatuccio of Ozone Park described her husband's devotion to his job the same way... "He thought those buildings were his..."

The two men, who knew each other, both worked in the Port Authority's property management department at the trade center... Barbella escaped from the explosion eight years ago... Amatuccio was hired to replace someone killed in that bombing... On Sept...11, both men were among those Port Authority workers who joined in efforts to save others... Both remain missing...

Sometime between the attacks on the towers and their collapse, Monica Barbella received a call from her husband...

"He called me from the operational command center, which was downstairs in the basement and asked me what happened because he didn't know," she said... "I relayed the information to him and he relayed it to the people behind him and said, 'OK... Goodbye...' The last sighting that anybody had, he was going up the stairs, back into the building with Port Authority police..."

Debra Amatuccio said it was her husband's love for the buildings and the people who worked there that made him return not once, but two, three and maybe more times to pull workers and friends from what remained of the towers...

"I have to go, I have to go and help," the 41-year-old Amatuccio yelled to his wife over the phone when the first plane hit, she said... He called her again, after the second plane struck... She screamed for him to get out... But she said he wanted to make sure "his people" were safe...

Amatuccio was last seen in the lobby of Tower Two, his wife said...

Both Amatuccio and Barbella are among the 68 Port Authority employees who are unaccounted for, said authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco...

Barbella began working for the Port Authority 29 years ago... He was a general maintenance supervisor at the time of the attack, an authority spokesman said... He worked in a variety of sites over the years, landing at the Twin Towers about 10 years ago... "He never wanted to go anywhere else..."

"He was a very physically fit man," Monica Barbella said of the man she met in the old neighborhood, the Flatbush section of Brooklyn - "he was one of the older boys" - and married 30 years ago... They have three grown children...

"He used to run up the stairs of the World Trade Center from the basement level to the top..." She believes that was why he accompanied Port Authority police up into the building to help others... "They knew he could do it..."

Landing a job with the Port Authority, where he currently was chief maintenance supervisor, was part of Joseph Amatuccio's quest for a better life... The same ambition led him to obtain a bachelor's degree in business administration from Queensboro College in 1998, his wife said... He came to the authority after stints as a toll booth collector and carpenter...

The couple, who married in 1986, merging their two families into one, was in the process of closing on their new house at month's end... But that's on hold now, Debra Amatuccio said... She has collected every toothbrush, dental record and razor sample she can... Called all of the hospitals and searched all the missing person and body-parts lists she can stomach... But, she said, "I know in my heart I'm never going to see him again..."

Though James Barbella is officially listed as missing, his wife said she believes he's gone... Yet, she is comforted by the fact that he perished trying to help people in the place that he loved...

"If my husband had a choice to die, it would've been in those buildings... The Port Authority has a very strange relationship with the buildings, a personal relationship... He never would've left that building before it went down..."

Michael, 33, knew yesterday that his mother and Joey Jr...'s wife, Donna, his two sisters and his nieces and nephews needed him, needed a strong, grown, male Angelini nearby, perhaps as much or more than he needed to be nearer his brother... "It's hard to figure out what's the right place to be in," he said, already having decided to stay with the family... "I want so much to go back there..."

Michael works for the Fire Patrol of New York, which operates under the New York Board of Underwriters, protecting the interests of insurers during and in the aftermath of commercial property fires... Wearing the same firefighting gear, except for the distinctive red helmet that denotes Fire Patrol, he responded to the World Trade Center disaster last Tuesday morning, as did his father, a 40-year FDNY veteran assigned to Rescue 1, and his brother, of Ladder Co... 4 in the Theater District... "We were all in the same area, and none of us knew it," he said...

In the lobby of one of the stricken towers, a fire supervisor suddenly ordered him out of the building... They passed firefighters who had just encountered the body of department chaplain Father Mychal Judge... Michael helped carry Judge away... "......... but then my officer grabbed me and said, 'Let's go!'" he said... "We ended up a block or two north on West Murray Street..."

Michael entertained a slender hope that his brother might have finished his tour early and gone home... He suspected otherwise, and he learned later that afternoon that Joey had done what his father would have done and what so many other firefighters did who were supposed to be ending their tours at 9 a...m... They went to work...

Once a jokester and a partygoer, Joey Jr... had undergone personality changes increasingly noticeable to Michael during the past seven years, since he had joined the department and Donna gave birth to the first of their three children, Jennifer... He had worked previously as an electrician with the Transit Authority... "I didn't want him to leave Transit," said his mother, "because they were about to make him a foreman... But, for some reason, he switched over to the fire department..."

"Since then," Michael said, "I saw him taking on more and more of my father's traits... Before, we used to go out a lot, he and I... He was silly, funny... Now, getting him to go out was like pulling teeth... I tell old stories to guys he worked with, and they'll look at me like I'm talking about somebody they don't know... He had become so, like, straight... He just wanted to be with his family... He was showing more and more of that integrity, that seriousness, like my father...

"Three things were important to my father: his family, the church and the department, and I'm not sure in what order... My father was honest to a fault, religious... I remember walking back from the store with him... I was only little... He realized that the counter girl had given him 30 cents too much in change, and we had to walk all the way back... I mean, it was almost ridiculous... Joey was becoming more like that... It was good to watch, but it's hard to live up to..."

The elder Angelini was in special operations that morning, and Michael hoped he too might have been sent elsewhere, but he really knew better... His father was legendary in the department for loving the work, for loving "to get dirty," for loving "making a grab [rescuing somebody]," for routinely walking out of a mostly extinguished inferno and lighting a cigarette while younger firefighters lay sprawled around him, exhausted...

Earlier this year, at a Holy Name Society communion breakfast tribute for his 40th anniversary as a firefighter, the short, wiry, gray-haired Angelini resisted efforts by his fellow firefighters to get him to wear more of his medals... "They convinced him to put on maybe a third of them," Michael said... "Then he said, 'Stop... I'm tired of pinning these on...'

"He kept them in the back of a drawer, in a box," Michael said... "He didn't tell us about half of them... He didn't talk about what he did... You would be eating dinner across from him and notice that he looked dif- ferent, like, strange, and then you would realize that his face was all red, and his eyebrows were completely gone, and his hairline had receded... He was burned... You would say, 'What happened to you?' And he would say, 'Aw, something flashed over me...'

"At the site, all week, guys were joking about him finding a pocket and eventually walking out... They said to me, 'He was probably buried in a void, and as soon as he runs out of cigarettes he's gonna come walking out...'"

Rescue workers found the body of Joey Angelini on Monday... He had been listed as missing since the day after the attack... Joey Jr... still is missing... After tomorrow's funeral Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst, Michael probably will return to the site...

Deborah Apostol will never forget the look on her firefighter father in-law's face when she told him she was pregnant... Faustino Apostol, 55, was sure she was joking... Only one week earlier, his other daughter-in-law, Jennifer, announced she was going to have a baby...

"He just stood in the living room for a good three minutes," recalled Deborah Apostol... "He kept saying, 'Are you sure? Are you sure?'"

Nine months later, Riley Thomas and Michael Thomas were born six days apart, creating one very busy set of grandparents... Mr... Apostol and his wife, the former Kathleen Neville, promptly converted a room in their Annadale home into a nursery, complete with fire engine baby sheets, hats and trucks...

Today the family struggles with how they will convey Mr... Apostol's humor, youthfulness, and loving nature to the 18-month-old boys as they grow up... He was killed in the World Trade Center attack Sept... 11...

"It would probably take me a year to write down everything I wanted to explain to my son and even those words probably wouldn't be enough," said Deborah Apostol...

Mr... Apostol was on duty that morning with Engine 24/Ladder 5 in the SoHo section of Manhattan, where he had worked since 1998... Earlier, he had served with Engine 55 in Little Italy, after beginning his career Jan... 25, 1978...

His unit was among the first to arrive at the scene... Soon after the first hijacked plane slammed into Tower 1, Mr... Apostol phoned his wife and told her the situation was under control and he was OK...

Those were the last words the high school sweethearts exchanged...

Like many firefighters, Mr... Apostol and his colleagues became family to one another... He and his good friend, Tony Castano, of the same engine company dined monthly with a group of firefighters at the Manor restaurant in West Orange, N...J... He vacationed with firefighters, and loved department outings... He was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Columbian Association...

Mr... Apostol cultivated many friendships through the department, in the neighborhood and at his second job at Staten Island University Hospital, where he worked for 25 years, most recently as a security guard...

But perhaps the people who adored Mr... Apostol most are his family members... Not only his wife and his sons, Justin and Christopher, but also his daughters-in-law... He treated them like daughters, said Deborah Apostol...

When she first met her father-in-law they laughed about how they both liked singer Cyndi Lauper... "I almost said forget about my husband, he's the keeper..."

"My in-laws were like our friends... We'd go out to restaurants... We'd take them to see a band... All the time... You just had to invite them and they were there," she said...

Mr... Apostol enjoyed Pink Floyd, Meat Loaf, even Marc Anthony... "Loud music," said his daughter-in-law...

The couples vacationed together 11 times in Wildwood, N...J...

When the grandchildren were born, Mr... Apostol fell naturally into his role as grandfather... "He just did anything and everything for those boys," said Deborah Apostol... Even though they are not quite 2 years old, Mr... Apostol was already teaching them how to hold a baseball...

Mr... Apostol thought his daughter-in-law was joking about her pregnancy because they often teased each other... The family would playfully say things like Mr... Apostol wasn't allowed in a restaurant because of his "disorderly" conduct...

In addition to music, Mr... Apostol had a passion for antique cars... His sons were considering buying him one for his 60th birthday... He also loved to travel, especially to the Caribbean...

He had been there as a young man, when he served in the Navy from 1965 to 1968...

Born in Manhattan, he moved to Stapleton in 1948... The 1965 Curtis High School graduate settled in Annadale about 22 years ago, where he became a neighborhood helper...

"He was the type of guy who, if he saw you taking in the groceries and you had one too many bags, he'd come running across the parking lot and take one from you," said Deborah Apostol...

Mr... Apostol was a devoted parishioner of Holy Child R...C... Church in Eltingville...

In addition to his wife of 33 years, Kathleen, his sons, Justin and Christopher, and his two grandsons, surviving is his mother, Lena Apostol...

When Jimmy Boyle, retired city firefighter, first heard on Tuesday morning that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, he knew his son, Michael, a city firefighter, was supposed to be off-duty...

Michael, 37, loved politics almost as much as the fire department, and he was planning to go out to Queens from Manhattan to work on a City Council primary campaign...

But his father also knew that many firefighters look on their occupation as more than a job, and he remembered what happened when Michael fought his first fire six years ago...

He stayed at his post in the fur vault of a burning department store even though the heat got so intense it left burns all around his face mask... "He came out exhausted, beaten," said his father, who lives in Westbury... "He said, 'It was hot, but I couldn't leave, Dad, because I wasn't supposed to...' I said, 'Mike, you did a great job...'"

Jimmy Boyle, head of the firefighters' union during the 1980s and '90s, was in Brooklyn on Tuesday, and what he knew about his son and his son's colleagues made him very worried... He set off on foot across the Brooklyn Bridge toward the World Trade Center, hoping not to find Michael...

He was right to be worried... Michael Boyle was among the 300 New York City firefighters still missing yesterday... Among them were two other firefighters - and probably many others - who also didn't really have to be there, but wound up inside the doomed towers because of their sense of duty...

One of them was David Arce, 36, who grew up in Westbury with Michael Boyle... The two had been best friends since childhood, served in the same fire company and worked together on political campaigns... Arce, also off-duty on Tuesday, had planned to go to Queens with Michael...

Marjorie Ginobbi, who lives next door to the Arce family and watched the two boys grow up, wasn't surprised David wound up in a job that involves helping people...

"Anything I needed help with, he was always there... Cutting the grass, painting, anything that needed to be carried - he was just a wonderful kid..."

When he grew up, she said, "It was like he had been born to be a firefighter... He loved the work - always smiling..." Arce's father, Dr... A...G... Arce, died of diabetes in February... His mother, Margaret, a geriatric nurse, said her son and Michael Boyle "were like twin brothers..."

"David grew up playing with fire engines, and the desire to be a firefighter never went away," she said... "It's a typical fireman story... It was the love of his life... There's such a closeness with firefighters, a beautiful thing to watch, and the families have to accept whatever is dealt..."

Perhaps the best-known firefighter who didn't have to be in the World Trade Center was Capt... Timothy Stackpole of Brooklyn... He was fighting a fire in a city-owned building in 1998 when the floor collapsed, dropping him and two firemen 10 feet into a roaring blaze... The flames burned more than 30 percent of his body...

The city agreed to pay the three $4...2 million after their lawyers argued that the city hadn't heeded warnings about the building's structural flaws... Court records don't specify the individual payments, but it was clear Stackpole could have retired with a large nest egg and a lucrative disability pension...

Instead, after two months in a hospital, he spent many painful hours in the gym rebuilding his body and went back to work as soon as he could pass a physical...

"He came back when someone else would have retired happily," Msgr... Thomas Brady, a former fire department chaplain, said... At his church, Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Marine Park, Brooklyn, Stackpole taught children and counseled couples about to marry... "He was a very religious man in the best sense," Brady said...

So far this week, the monsignor said, he has heard of about eight or 10 missing firefighters whose fathers were also firefighters... "Every day I hear of more - it's in the blood..."

As Jimmy Boyle searched for his son on Tuesday, he reached the World Trade Center just as one of the towers collapsed, showering the street with debris and temporarily blinding him with dust... He narrowly escaped injury by groping his way into a doorway... Finding out nothing at the scene, he went to his son's firehouse nearby and opened Michael's locker...

He found what he hoped wouldn't be there - Michael's car keys and wallet...

Later, he learned that Michael and David had jumped on a fire engine at the last minute in their civilian clothes... "If they had to die, it was fitting that they died together," Boyle's father said yesterday...

As Michael Boyle and his friend rode toward the World Trade Center on Tuesday, the burn marks from Michael's first fire six years ago were still visible on his face...

From the time he was a toddler, Louis Arena exhibited the generous spirit that endeared him to friends and family and ultimately cost him his life...

One day, when he was three years old, his sister, JoAnn Arena-Eisinger, remembered, she complained that she was hungry... So Arena"Louie" set out to find her something to eat...

"He walked down to the A&P, got a loaf of bread and walked out with it," she said... No one stopped him, and he brought it back home for her...

That was what her brother was like, she said...

"You said you needed something... You got it..."

Arena is one of several firefighters from Ladder 5, Manhattan, who disappeared into the rubble Tuesday while working to save countless others... His death, which was confirmed yesterday, occurred as he climbed the stairs in the North Tower of the World Trade Center looking for anyone who needed help...

"He was running up the stairs when other people were running down," said his wife of six years, Wanda (Reynolds) Arena... "It's so typical of him... He was always helping people... He was not concerned about himself..."

Arena was born in Besonhurst, Brooklyn, and his family moved to Heartland Village when he was four...

He was a graduate of St... Joseph by-the-Sea High School, Huguenot, and was a parishioner of St... Patrick's R...C... Church, Richmond...

A firefighter for six years, Arena first served at Ladder 5 before working out of Ladder 225 in East New York and Engine Company 309 in Brooklyn... He returned to Ladder 5 about two years ago...

"He was very dedicated to his [fire] house and loved everybody there," said Ms... Arena... "It was his second home..."

An Emergency Medical Service technician, Ms... Arena worked a full shift Tuesday in Manhattan after the disaster, keeping a watchful eye out for her husband...

"I knew he was with such a wonderful team," she said... "They were smart and they were strong and I really thought they were going to make it..."

Ms... Arena said her husband was a gourmet cook who also could build or repair anything... He did countless favors for family and friends, even scheduling his days off so that he could help others...

He also loved spending time with his children, Nina, 4, and Joseph, 3...

"He was very protective of everyone," said Ms... Arena-Eisinger, "especially his kids..."

He and his wife regularly ran in various memorial races for fallen firefighters and police...

In addition to his wife, his sister and his children, surviving are his parents, Joseph and Jenny Arena; and three brothers, Frank, Salvatore and Anthony...

Armstrong grew up in Manhattan and lived on the Upper East Side... He told Nolan that he wanted their children to attend the same schools he did as a boy, she said...

He enjoyed riding his bike in Central Park and reading up on his hometown, which he already seemed to know everything about...

"You could say you went to a building on 14th Street, and he would know exactly what building it was and what it looked like," Nolan said... "He had one of those antique maps of old New York on his wall, and he would get books on the history of New York and the history of Central Park..."

He was most proud that he got the job on his own and was just one of three people out of a group of 75 applicants who were offered the position on the bond trading desk...

Joshua's passion was music... He created a nonprofit event production company called Steps Back to Life and gave himself the moniker DJ Samsson... His dad's name is Sam and he respected and looked up to him so much he wanted to honor him... He spun underground club music and produced a CD...

While attending Columbia University, Josh DJ'd for Barnard's radio station, WBAR and arranged for a Thanksgiving benefit for the homeless collecting money and canned food... It was a big success... He later interned for Atlantic Records for a semester...

Josh loved the New York Yankees, playing golf, training for the San Diego Marathon in January and making people laugh...

He will forever be missed and loved by all he touched and is an inspiration to all who knew him...

The beach was Bruce's first love... He was a Nassau Beach lifeguard for about 15 years... During those years Bruce formed many close friendships which he nurtured until this tragic event... His greatest pleasure was boogie boarding with his daughters and friends at Jones Beach West End 2...

Bruce loved physical activity... He worked out everyday by running, swimming or biking... He ran about 10 New York City marathons and participated in many Long Island marathons and triathlons... He loved competition...

Bruce was also an avid fan of Hofstra University's football, basketball and lacrosse teams... He attended most home games... Bruce and 14 of his friends had just celebrated Hofstra's opening football season with a tailgate party on September 1, 2001... They enjoyed cheering the Hofstra Pride football team to victory...

Bruce will be missed by many people especially the people who saw him running throughout the streets of Franklin Square and West Hempstead, He truly loved his family, friends and country... Bruce was passionate about life...

She said she needed expensive clothes because the clients were very high-class people, said her uncle, Clifford Tillman... But the truth was, Ms... Bowers had always been a lavish spender and generous... Mr... Tillman remembers that Ms... Bowers, 26, got a Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirt for Dior last Christmas...

Dior is 9 and has muscular dystrophy and uses a walker and has the mental capacity of a younger child... He and his mother lived with her grandmother... Mr... Tillman said Ms... Bowers called her grandmother on her cell phone when the building was hit and was so hysterical she was saying that an ambulance hit the building...

Then she called her mother... "She started yelling to her mother that something is wrong, the building is shaking and smoke is everywhere," Mr... Tillman said... "She was saying, `Mommy, mommy, I'm trapped' and she made a statement that she loves her... Then everything went dead..." Straightening out Ms... Bowers room this week, her family found a pair of green Gucci boots, with gold trim, still in tissue paper...
